Well it was my home sweet home, until the threat arrived. It was just like any other ordinary day, my family and I were in charge of gathering breakfast for the community. Fish, Salmon and I got together to play in the water and talked about how Lil’ Cutie’s new hairstyle looked like she got attacked by a rainbow.
Fae the Arctic Fox and I were hiding the snow since we were playing hide and seek (it was my sister Polly’s turn to seek).
Then all of a sudden, a loud rumbling shook the ground. Fae and I emerged from the crumbling snow and gripped tightly to some nearby ice. All the animals gaped at the large metal machine driving past, crunching the snow and ice underneath. Inside were strange creatures that are known as hoomans or humans. I always forget. But they looked nothing like the monkeys they claimed to be. They wore huge puffy jackets and boots that looked like they were made out of… (gulp) ANIMAL SKIN! At the back of the boat, an even stranger flag flapped in the wind.
From then on, more machines came and went. Every day at the same time, at the same place, always taking the same things. A thin slice of ice that was dug from beneath. And when they’re feeling really greedy, they took the fish and anything else they could get their filthy hands on. Now, we don’t laugh or play or talk or stay outside often. Whenever we go hunting we are quick and only take what we need. No dessert. I was so scared that I didn’t even have time to be sad about no dessert. When the hoomans or humans came we all would hide.
We took extra precautions. The polar bears used their sharp claws to dig deep, wide holes everywhere (including me). That way any animal could hide whenever and wherever they are outside in case the hoomans or humans come. The fish would splash the water with their fins and the birds would call out to us to alert us about the hoomans or humans' daily arrival. That way we had a chance to hide before they came.
One particular night, I curled up tighter in my pile of snow and shuffled closer to the rest of my family. I could not sleep because of the loud thumping and rumbling of the metal machines with the hoomans or humans and their strange flag. I pray that Fish, Salmon, Shi and Sho the twin shrimp, Fae and even Lil’ Cutie (I know right, what have these hoomans or humans done to me?!) are safe. I couldn’t even bear the thought of losing them, Mum, Dad and all my siblings.
We had done all we could. All the animals were now working together to defend ourselves. I gripped my paws and sobbed softly. I felt my Mum's fur wrap me closer and she sobbed with me too. She knew what I was feeling.
We were all in fear.
