She leant over the railing to adjust the angle of a lighting rig in front of her. She couldn’t quite reach so she extended her arm completely, splaying her fingers in a desperate attempt to grasp the lights. Her concentration was grabbed by another thought when the curtains opened to display an empty stage, the audience members making a mix of anticipated and confused murmurs. It all happened in a blur, one second she was above the stage among her fellow light techs and the next she was rudely slammed against the cool, wooden floor of the stage. Knocked back to her senses by an uproar of applause she stumbled upwards. Once on her feet she spun to meet the crowd, raising her hand to block the harsh light focussing on her. She finally connected the dots when she made eye contact with her friend up on the catwalk, he had both his thumbs up, as if wishing her luck. This couldn’t be happening…
Continued work :)
But it was… and she had to roll with it, after all the show had to go on. Abigail swished her cape and raised her arms above her head before bowing. The crowd roared! New feelings coursed through her veins, power and manipulation. This was a magician's job… to trick the unsuspecting audience's eyes, her being there, performing in front of them was just a form of magic…right? She’d watched magicians perform on this stage before. Her eyes wandered to the hidden trap door positioned in the centre of the stage, she’d watched prior performers use it, mentally noting its placement in case she required a quick getaway. After all, she wasn’t meant to be the star. But for now, she enjoyed the spotlight.
She strode with purpose to each corner of the stage, picking up different ‘magical’ items. And after each magic trick the crowd bellowed with surprise and support. The stage was hers to command, the audience was in the palm of her hand. However, there was one trick she was avoiding, one she never understood. The untouched sword stood patiently next to the trap door, waiting for her unsteady hands to show it off. But each time she crossed the stage, she kept her gaze far from it. Sword swallowing was an incredible illusion, only few magicians dared to learn it. Unfortunately for Abigail it was one of ‘Gwyn Knights’ famous tricks. The hush that cascaded over the audience each time she strode past the sword was enough to tell her they were waiting for it. The final trick they were waiting for. She wasn’t stupid enough to dare attempt Gwyn’s trick just to earn their praise…right?
