Cold air dried his throat as Jimmy made his way to the cockpit. He took his seat and strapped on the seat belt. Chattering noises filled his ears, making him even more nervous. He picked up the microphone to the PA system with a shaking hand and said “Hello everyone. I am Pilot J-Shaun and I will be your captain for today. Thank you for flying with Light Speed Airlines. I hope your flight is satisfactory. Thank you.” He put down the microphone and examined the many buttons that were in front of him. He picked up the microphone again, “Alright, will be taking off now so please fasten your seat belts. Thank you.”

WHOOSH! The plane went up in to the sky and Jimmy glanced quickly at the GPS, then quickly back at the sky. He was doing it! Jimmy, who had never in his whole life even touched the door to the cockpit of a plane, was now flying one!!! He felt a lot better now that he was flying straight but soon the pressure made his ears ache.

Jimmy began to imagine what it would be like once he landed the plane. ‘I would be a real life pilot! I would be famous… but everyone would think I was someone else. Well, at least I’ll get the money! Oh… but it would probably be given to the real pilot’s bank account. Well I would still get a free holiday, ooh! And I might be able to fly to Italy and finally visit Mum, and maybe even try some of her world famous gelato. I’ve heard she has flavours that no one else could even come up with!

Oh and I could visit Dad and Granny in California and see how their novel is coming along. And I-” Jimmy was interrupted by a flashing light that said OFF COURSE. “Oh whoops!” Jimmy steered the plane to face North rather than West. Returning to his thoughts, he began to shake with the realisation: “Maybe I could start to patch up the family and bring us back together.”

SQUAWK! SQUAWK! Suddenly a bird came flying in and almost crashed into the windscreen of the plane! In a panic, Jimmy quickly banked, turning the plane sideways, but in the process his elbow hit a button that caused the plane start to dive straight down! Frantically he pulled up the control column and the plane ascended. Hearing passengers screaming, he grabbed the microphone once again. “Sorry about that, we had a technical difficulty but you are in safe hands.” He put it down. “I sure hope that doesn’t happen again.” Jimmy said nervously shaking his head.

He continued to think of the possibilities now that he was a pilot. ‘I would need another job since I wouldn’t actually get money for this. Maybe I could be a professional gamer and game on my phone on long flights!’. Jimmy glanced at the GPS again. It was only four more minutes until they would reach Hawaii.

It was time to land. Jimmy gulped, took a deep breath and with a shaking hand, reached for the landing manual. As he frantically scanned the procedure, he realised it was just like how to land a plane in a flight simulator! Now he knew exactly what to do. He began to press a series of buttons before pulling a lever. Sweat dripped down his face. Then he flawlessly steered the plane to line up perfectly with the lane.

WHOOSHHHHHH! The sound of the plane landing was screaming in Jimmy’s ears. It glided across the lane before coming to a stop towards the end. “I did it!” he shouted. Everybody clapped for him as he had just flown a plane without a co-pilot which was very dangerous. He sat back in his seat imagining the bright future ahead of him.
