There once was a town called Burgandee, all though to call it a town would be a lie. Towns generally have thousands of people living there, but not this one. Burgandee was remote, and hardly any tourists visited, because there was absolutely nothing to see. The only visitors they would get were young children on excursions, who looked completely miserable and bored, and like they would've rather done a week load of silent reading instead of coming there. There were only 100 or so people living in Burgandee, and they were all a weird bunch, especially the committee known as the DNC. The DNC (or the Dinosaur Nerds Club) came together every Sunday just to talk about dinosaurs.
There were only six people in the club, although they wished to have hundreds one day. One of them, a female who did reading and writing for a living, was McKenzie. She was quite shy, and although she had extreme knowledge of dinosaurs, often kept it buried deep down, instead of sharing.
Then there is Klent, a kind young man in his early twenties, who was in charge of running the excursions that the children of schools come to. Being in charge of young kids all day is quite stressful, because if someone got injured, he would have to fill in the paperwork, so he always was too safe. That was the main reason everyone was miserable and bored when they came to Burgandee.
Similar to McKenzie, Nemina was quite creative. She spent her spare time doing puzzles and art, often in the sun, alone.
Laycee is a bright young lady, only of the age 19. She works at a preschool during the day, and then goes and volunteers at a nursing home. She is quite energetic, as she drinks at least ten coffees a day.
Davy is the youngest member of the group, only 9 and he spends all day researching dinosaur facts on his computer, which is covered from head to toe in dinosaur stickers. The bad thing about being that young, is, he does not know what half the words mean.
The last member of this cuckoo group is probably the most normal of them all, Bob. he spends all of his time doing one thing; sleeping. He goes into hibernation every day, and only comes out on Sunday's for the DNC, because his mum said he had to get in the community. Bob still lives with his mum, because every time he tries to get a job, he falls asleep during the interview, and does not even get considered for the job, and therefore, cannot pay to live in a house of his own.
Little did everyone in Burgandee know that their small town was about to change for good.
"Good morning everyone!" Began Laycee ecstatically. "Today we have a very important matter to discuss. Recently, our small town discovered a dinosaur bone, that has not been found anywhere, ever before!"
"Actually, the Deinonychus was first found in Brazil, in the year 2021, by a guy named Hector. We have only found one of the many vertebrae, but-"
"Anyway, as I was saying," interrupted Laycee. "We need some way to celebrate this big find! After all, this is the only one in existence!"
"Well thats not tru-" Began Davy.
"Any ideas?" Davy sighed, then looked around the room, and was not surprised when only one person had their hand raised. "Yes, Klent?"
Klent lowered his hand then started to ramble: "Well I don't really care what we do as opposed to how safe we are I don't want to do paperwork so can we please do it safe so none of us have to do it unless one of you likes paperwork but that would be quite odd so please can we put in rules like no running and/or you have to walk?"
Everyone rolled their eyes secretly, as they had expected something like this to come out of Klent's mouth. McKenzie raised her hand and when Laycee pointed at her said in a voice as silent as a whisper: "We could make everyone dress up as dinosaurs?"
Everybody thought this was an excellent idea, even Laycee apparently. Everyone except Bob.
"Can't we just make everyone go to sleep for the day?" He yawned, and rolled over on the floor(which he chose to use instead of a comfy chair), tightly clutching Patches, his teddy bear.
"That is a great idea, McKenzie! I fully endorse it!" Laycee chirped excitedly. Davy's hand shot up as an idea sprang on him.
"What if, extending on McKenzie's idea here, we not only make everyone dress up, but we also make them act like dinosaurs for a whole day?" He said with a big grin spreading on his face.
A small whimper could be heard from someone in the room.
"Even better!" Laycee said, clapping her hands together and squealing at the same time, completely ignoring Nemina's remark.
Bob moaned in displeasure, as he pulled up his blanket.
"Meeting adjourned!" Called Laycee. A sigh of relief could be heard from two places at once.
"I um... I have to go... I have an important meeting to go to." Squirmed Nemina.
"Yeah..." Davy muttered as Nemina started fast walking to the door. "Wait!!!" Called Davy. "You have been awfully quiet this session."
"Yeah, you really have, which is odd because-" Began Klent. Nemina looked like she was about to pull out a taser gun, tase them, then run off to her meeting.
"Look, all I was saying was if you ever need to talk, I am here for you." Davy interrupted Klent. Nemina gave a silent nod and a weak smile, then disappeared from sight as she closed the wooden door behind her.
The next meeting was scheduled for the week after, so they once again found themselves in the section of the library which they hired out weekly.
The next meeting was a quick 30 minute one -one of the quickest sessions they had ever had- where they were each assigned jobs to help speed up the progress. They each had important jobs to do. Davy and Klent’s job was to inform everyone about the upcoming event, McKenzie and Nemina’s job was to sow the costumes together, Bob’s job was to give Laycee a list of supplies, as well as tick off what supplies they currently had, and Laycee’s job was to go shopping and buy the supplies, as well as make sure everyone was doing their job to the fullest extent. Nemina was much more into it and talking much more.
“Everyone available next Thursday arvo?” Asked Laycee as they were packing up their area.
“Yep.” Chorused the others.
On their way out, McKenzie and Nemina collided, sending paper flying, which they both scrambled to collect.
“Oops! Sorry, my bad!” Stated Nemina.
“No it was my fault, I should have been watching where I was going.” McKenzie retaliated.
They half-walked half-jogged out the door, both saying the meeting was on again. Klent, Bob and Laycee left soon after, with Davy about to follow after them, when he noticed something on the floor. He jogged over to it, careful not to drop his computer, and scooped it up. It’s a diary! Davy thought. But whose is it?
Davy's head was clouded with thoughts, so much so that he did not realise he was opening the diary until it was too late. His hands flicked through to the most recent journal entry, and found it was written that very day.
Davy looked around him, to see if anyone was watching. When he was positive no one was, he began to read.
Oh Diary,
How I miss my son!!!
Tear stains could be seen on the page, smudging some of the words.
The meeting went well, but I am scared that they are going to figure me out! I cannot bring myself to look and act like a dinosaur without Charli! I need to sabotage their plans somehow… Maybe I could ‘lose’ the costumes.
Oh why do you have to go so low to make yourself feel better!
There was another half page worth of writing, but it was way too smudged with melancholy tears to read.
There was only one more sentence that was not covered in tears.
Now I have heard all the jobs, I have a few ideas on how to sabotage.
It was then that Davy realised what he had discovered.Someone on the DNC had a missing son, Charli. Someone on the DNC had been so overwhelmed with sadness, that they probably could not read their own journal. Someone on the DNC was planning to sabotage the dress-up! Davy knew he had to find out who was planning this. He shut the book, and chucked it back on the floor, so no-one would know that he read it.
Little did Davy know, on the page after, it had a list of all the ideas on how to sabotage. That really was the end of the journal, but Davy had missed out on vital information on who the suspect may be.
The next meeting, everyone except Davy was relaxed and chill. As Davy was walking to his chair, he heard a loud BAM! Davy was sitting upright in his chair, his eyes darting across the room, to see where the noise had come from, and brainstorming who might be the one and only antagonist. He craned his neck to see Laycee's body sprawled out across the floor.
"OW!" She groaned as she slowly rose up from the floor.
"What happened?" Asked Klent as he quickly strode over on his long legs.
"I was walking, then I slipped on something soft and squishy." Laycee said, clutching her head, which contained a pounding headache.
Everyone scanned the room, looking for the thing that made Laycee slip. As Davy was looking, he noticed something with brown fur and a love heart on it's chest. He dashed over, grabbing the culprit and declaring:
"Patches, the cute and adorable bear that you put there to make her fall over, therefore delaying the meeting! Bob, you have some explaining to do!"
"Wait, don't accuse me of anything! I am innocent!" He said with a yawn. "Patches is right here!"
Everyone indeed looked, and to their absolute surprise, found Patches on Bob's pillow.
They all looked at each other, when Nemina said:
"Something fishy is going on here."
